A few hours of old-fashioned domestic family fun
One of my cousins got married in Michigan this past New Years Eve, and so my New Years weekend was full of family events. During a Rose Bowl party on Saturday I realized that I wasn't particularly interested in the game, so I started a little gathering in a room without a TV. I was trying to teach my 16-year-old cousin how to knit, and to review basic stitches with her 12-year-old-twin sisters. Having three students at once wasn't working out too well, so my Mom and my sister Em were enlisted to work with the twins. We knitted and chatted and were joined by an aunt and an older cousin, who between them have two toddlers and two babies under a year old. We passed the babies around the room and watched the two and three year old play. Three of the kids went upstairs for baths and came down wearing little hooded towels that have animal faces on the hoods. My cousin breastfed her little baby, and one of the toddlers took off her towel and ran around naked before getting into her pjs. The whole scenario felt kind of timeless, a group of related women of different ages, hanging out and sharing skills, helping take care of each others children.
