Commudating? Damuting?
A few days ago I was griping to Amanda and Tracy about the strange silence of my morning commute on the el. Most days I enjoy quietly drinking my coffee and reading a book as I ride downtown, but sometimes sitting in packed car of people who are studiously ignoring each other drives me crazy. Tracy, who was visiting from New York, said that she thought that the el seemed friendlier than the subway, because most people were either listening to music or reading a book, not both, so they didn't seem as completely wrapped up in themselves.
Amanda suggested that I start a new dating service called It's Just a Commute, along the lines of the It's Just Lunch service that is advertised on the el. People could meet up on a mutually convenient platform, ride downtown together, and have a thirty minute chat. Of course, it would be a rather public first date, but at least your fellow commuters would pretend not to eavesdrop.

Funny stuff!
I agree with your friend Tracey. The El is a bit friendlier than the NYC subway. Your idea of a sharin' the ride dating service has possibilities.
Be glad you're not riding the metro in DC, where a cup of coffee will get you arrested. Oh well, you can read, or listen to your iPod, or relax in subway stations there that have AC (a necessity in DC, believe me! Two.
