Like a mid-week Saturday Although I’ve been back in Illinois for almost two years, I still haven’t changed my cell phone number to a local number, and until yesterday didn’t have an Illinois driver’s license. Spending part of my birthday at the DMV was actually kind of funny. I also got a new ribbon for a typewriter I picked up an estate sale recently, watched beans being roasted at my favorite coffee shop, and took my dog for a run. All in all a chill day.
While I was winding down at home last night I got a few phone calls from people at my parents’ house in Michigan. My cousin Ken, an international man of mystery whose jobs I can never really grasp, is starting a new 2.5 to 5 year gig in Botswana and South Africa in a few weeks, and flew in from DC to make the family rounds before departing. He and my mother, usually a one glass of wine kind of woman, consumed the majority of two pitchers of sangria while hanging out on the porch last night. I didn’t know that before he called me to have kind of a wandering conversation about Africa and law school, and just thought that he was a little distracted. A few hours later my mom called asking me for tips so she wouldn’t be hung over in the morning, and told me about how she wants to go on safari in Botswana. I called the house to tease her in the morning, and my dad answered. He had been a bit more restrained, and was feeling fine, but he didn’t think mom was feeling that great. He he.
