Bike Commuting Setting lofty long-term goals without benchmarks used to be a habit of mine, but it never did much to change my life because, well, there no set time, (besides New Years Eve of the following year) to check in to see how I had progressed, there was no plan. So I started setting more reasonable goals. Organize mail using handy mail-sorter purchased for that purpose—clean it out on the weekend. Complete an 18 week marathon training course and run the marathon. Etc. I’ve recently started trying out long term goals in short spurts. Instead of deciding to eat healthfully for the rest of my life, I decided to try it for a week. I stocked up on fresh and frozen vegetables, lean protein, whole grain stuff, etc. and stayed away from dessert for a week. It felt good, and wasn’t a very drastic change (except for the lack of Ben and Jerry’s, and okay, nachos), so it was easy to continue. The next thing I’m trying is bike commuting. I bought a helmet and a proper bike lock (my old one didn’t look too trustworthy), checked out recommended bike routes and tried it out yesterday, the official start of my bike commuting try-out week. I loved it. My bike commute was just about the same length as my walking/train commute--50 minutes--and I felt energized when I got to work. The ride home was also pleasant, although traffic was more hectic. I’d like to say that I did it again today, but I think that I’m going to have to alternate days at the start. I was a little tired this morning.
