I'm not even that much of a Simpsons fan...

But this line from my patent law reading brought this episode to mind. Some guy tried to patent a perpetual motion machine in 1989, and in a discussion of it's utility, the casebook authors say "while it is clear that a machine able to produce more energy that it consumes would be highly useful and beneficial to society, it is equally clear that such a machine would violate the fundamental laws of thermodynamics."
