Memory bubbles

You know those mental touchstone moments in your life, the ones that you can't force yourself to remember, but that bubble up in your mind unbidden, crystal clear, as the perfect example of . . . something? I've been in a good mood this weekend, and the memories that surfaced have made me happy.

  • Silliness and the fun of new love. Leaning out my open, screenless senior year apartment bedroom window on a spring night with my new boyfriend. We looked down into the courtyard, and saw my friend Kristina and her visiting boy Ryan leaving her building. We shouted introductions and greetings. A competition of romantic gestures ensued. He kissed me on the cheek. Ryan picked Kristina up and carried her out of the courtyard.
  • An acquaintanceship that lasts the span of two breakfasts, and the randomness of travel. A charming Iranian engineer who lives in Stockholm sat down at my breakfast table in our Brussels hostel last summer, and we hit it off immediately. It was refreshing to meet another solo traveler---I hadn't found many in the previous city, and I was getting tired of trying to butt in on groups if I wanted to have a conversation. We talked over croissants, Nutella, and coffee for two mornings, discussing our destinations and our lives. This was the reason I wanted to stay in hostels.
  • Serenity. Driving around near Lake Placid and the Adirondack Mountains on a sunny day in the winter, me in the backseat with my roommate's huskie Kayla, my roommate Kathleen and her boyfriend Nate up front, listening to Nick Drake on the car stereo.
