Getting ready for my dirt manicure

Spring's arrival and the end of the semester are making me think of summer. Studying for the bar exam will dominate my days, but I'm trying to put a few things into place that will help me keep my sanity.

One of those sanity preservatives is going to planning, planting, and tending a garden with Tara. We've been reading up on soil testing (yes, we'll be testing for lead), browsing through heirloom seed catalogs, and trying to figure out how the whole seed sprouting thing is going to work. Brendan plotted their backyard and the soon-to-be garden using drafting software. I'm in the middle of reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, and Tara has already read it.

I haven't gardened since I was a kid (except for those sugar snap peas I grew on the balcony at the Olive apartment), but how hard can it be? Best case scenario, we're wildly successful and we're forcing heirloom tomatoes, herbs, squash, and other veggies into the hands of our friends. Worst case scenario, nothing grows and we resort to the farmer's markets for our home-grown summer vegetables. At least we'll have a greater appreciation of the farmer's work.

Comments:
I think that's fantastic! Keep us posted on how it goes. If you're feeling ambitious, invite me over and we'll extract the DNA from a cucumber and run a gel electrophoresis.

Worst case scenario, dear, we fail and Brendan and I are left with a giant mud puddle in our backyard! But that won't happen, will it? Thinking about this garden is the one thing bringing me a sense of peace these days ...

Well, if we're left with a mud puddle, at least you guys know you have the ability to grow grass, right? Didn't you do that to your old back yard last summer? ;)

You ladies make me happy. Mmm, garden.
