When I'm out for a run and I'm feeling good, in that nice mile-3 I'm done with the uphill part of the 4 mile loop groove, I imagine myself running past cheering crowds at the end of a marathon. Pieces of information that I had forgotten pop into my head, 'I need to pay my credit card bill.' 'The meeting with Heather was rescheduled for Tuesday at 10.' When my posture is good and I'm wearing shorts I can picture myself as a gazelle racing down the sidewalks of Worcester, a gazelle that laughs at the silly people stuck in their cars in traffic. But when I'm running the 6 uphill miles from my apartment to Southwick Pond all my brain can handle are thoughts like '1-2-1-2', 'don't embarass yourself in front of the carloads of people driving by', and Madonna songs. This is probably typical for someone who last did regular, significant amounts of running in high school. To my fellow novice marathon runner wannabes out there, I say

Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be
