Yesterday I went to the Bourgeois Pig with Amanda to get some coffee, read, and work on my latest project, a cross stitch sampler that reads "Go Fuck Yourself." We ended up sitting next to a pair of middle aged guys who were both writing on their laptops and talking loudly enough that we couldn't ignore their conversation. The one sharing a creaky pew with me was a lawyer, and the other one was a teacher/author of horror and suspense novels. Mentioning that I have an interest in the law seemed to signal to the lawyer that I wanted to hear summaries of all of his current cases, stories about how the government employs a bunch of crooks, and what it was like working border patrol in New Mexico. Amanda chatted with the author guy, who was equally interested in talking all about himself. They were a little odd, but definitely interesting, and fun to talk to.

Amanda noted that people that middle aged people seem to have a lot to say to people our age, but aren't so interested in listening. I wonder why. Are they in need of fresh ears for their stories? Feeling the need to share the wisdom of their years?
