I picked up some new knitting skills at the DIY Trunk Show this past weekend. Chicago Stitch n' Bitch members were there giving demonstrations on the auditorium stage in the Pulaski Park Field House. I can now knit on the diagonal, something I probably won't use right away, but which was nice to learn. I thought that my volunteer instructor, Ann, looked kind of familiar, but couldn't place her. She asked me if I went to NU, and if I was in NUMB, (which I did, and I was) and then said that she thinks that we live in the same neighborhood. She'd seen me walking my dog. It turns out that she lives about a block away from me, which is great, because she offered to be a knitting info resource for me if I ever get really stuck on a project. I must admit that all I've ever made are scarves. I've used different types and gauges of yarn, used different stitch combinations, done multiple colors, even added fringe, but in the end, they've all been scarves. No increasing or decreasing required, no fitting to a foot or a hand. I think the time has come to make some legwarmers. It would force me to learn how to use double-pointed needles.
