Progressing vs. Regressing
Over the weekend I decided to make my New Years resolutions early, because well, the holiday season seems like a good time to try to get things right. I never make resolutions about weight loss or anything anyway. I was discussing this with Lindsay tonight, and found that she had also made resolutions over the weekend. My resolutions are all about interpersonal relationships, and we kind of determined that when you feel like you have something worked out, you find that something else is going wrong. Every lesson I learn about people makes me realize how little I know. I feel like I'm going backwards sometimes, like I got along better when I didn't understand so much, and wasn't aware of how much I didn't know.
My dog was lost tonight for a few scary minutes. Richie let him out to run around in the yard while he stood in the entryway sorting the mail, which he does every day. Henry had never run away before, so when I arrived at home, a few minutes after Richie noticed that he was missing, we were both pretty rattled. We ran down the alley in opposite directions, shouting his name. I asked some people who were walking their dog down Glenwood if they had seen him, and no one had. I heard a dog barking on Olive, so I turned the corner and started running down that block. There in the enclosed yard of our old apartment building stood Henry. I don't know how he got in there, if he nudged the gate open and it closed behind him, or if one of our old neighbors recognized him and put him in the yard. He knew enough to run towards home, it was just his old home. I kind of know the feeling.
