(Almost) driving home
Scene: Driving east on I-94 on Wednesday evening, a little snow in the air, dog snoozing in the backseat, the trunk of the car full of presents for the family, me singing along to a song on the radio.

Suddenly, vroom vroom, the RPMs shot way up on the dial, and the car started slowing down. The car was overheating and momentum was the only thing making it move forward. Fortunately we were near an exit, so I coasted part way up the exit ramp before the car decided that it would rather roll backward than forward. Brake, park, call Mom. I was about three quarters of the way to my parents house in Michigan, so my folks arrived within an hour, during which time I called a few friends, walked to a nearby gas station, and dreamed of a car-free life. My knights in shining armor arrived, scooped me, my dog and my belongings and drove us to a truck stop where we called a tow truck and got advice on where to take the stupid broken car.

LeBouef's will be fixing my car some time next week, and I'll be getting back to Chicago some other way. The trains are all sold out, so I'm considering hitchhiking.
