Shoppin locally
I had such lovely experiences today at a few local food shops that I have to steal a page out of fuckcorporategroceries' book and post about it. I had spent the morning and early afternoon lounging around the house and was getting a little restless, so I grabbed my knitting and a book and headed out toward Kopi Cafe for a change of pace. It seems like everyone else in the neighborhood had the same idea, because when I arrived the place was packed, so I decided to wander around a few shops. I popped into Pars Persian Store and picked up a box of black currant tea, and a pound and a half of uncooked bulghur (think tabouli salad). Total: $4.21. After browsing in Paper Trail and Women and Children First I decided to head home, and stopped at Edgewater Produce to get a few things. For $4.81 I got 3 tangerines, 4 new red potatoes, 3 dry onions, a dozen cage-free eggs, and 6 bananas. Amazing. These stores are always more pleasant than Jewel or Dominick's, the lines are shorter, the owners are people rather than large corporations, and they have better prices.
