New Gig
You know how the time it takes you to do work expands in proportion to how much extra time you have to do it? That's what's been happening to me lately. I'm only taking three classes, but I've been spending as much time as I would spend on four or five, just because I can. Okay, and also it's been a few years since the I did the full-time student thing, so I've been getting back up to speed. Anyway, getting a part-time job was part of the plan all along, and now it's happened.
I started my new job as a domestic violence court advocate this week. A few police districts give referrals to the organization I work for whenever they're called for a domestic violence incident. We call and follow up with the victims, and among other things help them get emergency orders of protection.
I went to criminal court today with another advocate, her client, her client's mother, and her client's young daughter to extend her order of protection. The whole procedure isn't too complicated, but it was interesting to see how it works, meet a few of the state's attorneys, etc.
Some of the stories that I've heard so far are pretty sad, but I think it will feel good to help these people (mostly women) in a small but concrete way.
