Lowered expect-aaaa-tions

Lindsay and I pioneered the lowered expectations game while on the way to a party last fall. No one likes to be disappointed by a social event, and since we didn't know what was going to happen, we decided to set our expectations low so that anything good that happened would make the night more pleasant. The party was fine due to us not having any insanely high expectations about it.

I tried to explain this strategy to some people this afternoon, and not surprisingly, they were skeptical.
"Don't you realize you're tricking yourself?"
"Well, it works better in groups. And I guess you only have to do it if you have a wild imagination that would normally get you in trouble by raising your expectations too high."

Sometimes you don't want to lower your expectations of yourself or of the people in your life, but its important not to set the bar unattainably high.

Comments:
Indeed, Miss Viele. Indeed. We are so clever and imaginative that we need to artificially lower our fantastico sights. I can currently think of several arenas in which the lowered expectations cure would be applicable. The housing. The job. The boys. You know. The usual. I think it's just a universal de-angster, really.
