Real live courtroom drama

Two of my clients had court today at the same time, one in civil and one in criminal. The nice thing about the new DV court is that everything is in the same building, so I was just running up and down between floors to go between the different divisions.

Today was the trial date for the one in criminal. They pushed us to the end of the call, and then we only got about half the trial in. The states attorney made her case, but the public defender hadn't finished making hers when the judge told us that we had to stop and finish on another date because she had to proceed over a jury trial in the courtroom next door at a certain time. The process was interesting to me, since it was the first time any client of mine had actually gone through to trial. They questioned witnesses, did cross examinations and all of that, but now my client is left hanging for a few more days until we can wrap things up. I guess thats a life lesson though---most trials aren't finished in less than a few hours.
