Pausing to look back

Kathleen and I grabbed sandwiches before class today at the Potbelly's near school. There's a lovely wide sidewalk with lots of tables, all the lines of the Loop running by on Wabash, and lots of pedestrian traffic. A nice place to people watch, if perhaps a bit loud every four minutes or so. We were talking about our summer plans and next year. She'll be studying in Greece this summer, I'll be studying in Austria. Next year we'll be 2Ls, which just seems odd somehow.

I said that I still feel like we're just jumping in and that I don't always feel like I know what I'm doing. Kathleen pointed out that compared to what we knew in August, and compared to what the average person knows about the law, we know a lot. I had to admit that it was true.

She'll be working for her mom for part of the summer (before and after her Greece program), learning how to draft contracts. She said sometimes she feels like she can't possibly know and understand all of law at one time. Then she realizes that when you practice, you specialize. I replied,

"Well, I don't know about you, but I practice every kind of law every day. A little Constitutional Law in the morning, 'cause you know, the ACLU is always calling me, and then maybe some estate planning over lunch..."

It's true, after the bar we likely be dealing with so many areas of law. But for now, I'm finding it pretty interesting. It may be jinxing myself to say this before finals, but I think I like law school, and I'm still glad that I'm here.
