This is what happens when you date a fellow law student

Steven: Oh, I don't have to take the dogs out. Remember, you said earlier that you would do it.

Me: I didn't say that. Or I didn't mean it. You take them out.

Steven: You're estopped from denying that you said you'd take them out.

What happens when you are friends with a law student who is a former journalist:

Correct grammar is "estopped to deny..."

You are estopped to deny that you said you wouldn't walk the dog.
 
You got me on that one, my darling grammar master. :) What I really love is one website's explanation of the word estoppel.

"All it means is 'stopped,' 'blocked' or 'not allowed.' Not only is it bizarre but the term does not appear to originate in any known language. Our research indicates it started either as a legal fraternity's drunken prank or was the result of an unknown Judge's severe speech impediment."
 
And you know, now that I think about it, my contracts prof always says "estopped from" not "estopped by." Hmm.
