Words of wisdom that I need to stop ignoring

After complaining to my boyfriend about how I was worried getting good grades, getting onto law review, and basically getting everything I wanted, he replied:

"You need to get used to losing. If you want, we can start playing chess. As a lawyer you're going to lose some of the time, and being a gracious loser is going to make you a better winner."

I suppose it's true. But I'd rather do my losing on the softball field than in the classroom.

Comments:
That's the worst advice I've ever heard. You know who "gets used to losing"?

Losers.

You're going to lose sometimes, but don't ever let anyone tell you that you have to like it.

Who said anything about liking it? I said get used to it... Speaking of, do you feel up to a game of chess???

I'll play you anytime, mystery man. I'll probably lose, because I tend to be just as impatient in my chess as is evident of my personality in my post, but I'm not going to like it one bit.

Brian, there is a difference between being a bad loser and a gracious loser. If you fuss and pout every time you lose a game, no one is going to want to play with you. If you pout or badmouth the other guy when you lose in court, you're likely to gain a certain kind of reputation. And there is a difference between impatience and immaturity.
