There are a lot of rules

Dating in law school can be complicated. Many of those pre-law school advice books advise against it, or at least say to proceed with caution. My personal law school dating rules are as follows
  • Don't date someone in your section. Even happy relationships require some space, and if you're fighting or you break up, do you really want to see that person every day for the next year?
  • If you must date someone from law school, better to date someone from a different year
  • Or even better, from a different school

However, all of that aside, even if you end up dating someone who you sit next to in every single class, who you have your locker next to, and who you will never be able to avoid, you MUST follow this rule.

Thou shalt not fight with, nor break up with a law student around finals or when they have a writing assignment due.

My own relationship has recently come to an end, which was sad, but the right thing. And I can confidently say that we're going to remain friends. However, my own situation aside, I think it's funny how universally known this last rule is. When he called some of his law school or lawyer friends to tell them the news, their reaction was "That sucks, but at least it wasn't around finals."
