How the apple falls
Home in Michigan for the weekend. Really, not a bad place to be. I've commandeered the kitchen table for studying purposes and the family doesn't seem to mind. They spent part of the day putting Christmas decorations up outside the house. Icicle lights lining the roofline and the porch, a set of three snow-people with wooden heads and human clothes on the balcony outside my sister's room. Baskets of pine branches and lights will soon take the places of the summer fern and flower baskets hanging from porch ceiling.
Decorating was one of the many tasks on the joint to-do list that Mom and Dad created this morning. Somehow today was the day of random repairs and safety inspections, with carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms receiving new batteries, lightbulbs being replaced, a section of the porch railing being worked on. They seemed to be competing over who got to cross out the largest number of list items. Mom accused Dad of hiding the list from her so she couldn't cross off something that she had done, and he added things he had already done to the list like "walk the dogs" just so he could cross them off. And you wonder where my competitive spirit comes from.
