Eating in my neighborhood
The boy and I live about a mile apart in the Logan Square area, and because we're either 1) lazy, or 2) neighborhood-centric (that sounds better doesn't it?) we end up going out to places not far from home. Prior to moving to Logan Square my west side of the city experience was limited to Wicker Park and Bucktown, but there is so much more out here. Here are a few good picks.
Treat First lured in by comparisons to Lula and their BYOB policy, we've returned because of their interesting food. Their menu changes seasonally, and the winter menu had several good Indian-inspired dishes. The peppercorn ice cream we had for dessert on our first visit is still haunting me. Delicious, no, weird, no, delicious!
Hachi's Kitchen Pretty great sushi, particularly the spicy white tuna crunch and the rainbow maki. The crazy maki was a cool idea (look, it's really huge and has a ton of stuff in it and it falls apart when you take a bite!), but it was awkward to eat. Nice atmosphere.
Rustik With its ski lodge-like decor and comfort food themed menu this place was great for dinner on a cold winter's night. It's new to the neighborhood, so I'm going to try to support it, but I'm hoping they lighten up the menu a little for the summer.
Fonda del Mar A nice Mexican seafood restaurant. I've had fantastic salmon and tilapia there. The patio out back is supposed to be cool, but we haven't been there since the weather warmed up.
Lula Yes, everyone *loves* Lula, and the wait can be long, but it is pretty amazing. Interesting flavors, seasonal and local focus, good stuff. I'm definitely going to take advantage of my exam-studying schedule to head over for a leisurely and delicious lunch.
Kuma's Korner Okay, this is more of a bar than a restaurant, but they've got this fantastic make-your-own mac & cheese that I think makes it worth the trip. And meat-eating Josh says that the burgers are great too.
Small Bar Okay, this really is just a bar, but I love their tater tots. And their jukebox. And their beer. Josh prefers the Division location because he's friends with one of the bartenders, but I like the one here on Albany.
