Project of the day: Learning to make good french press coffee
I've recently acquired a French press (or coffee plunger, or press pot if you prefer) and I've set about trying to learn to use it. My big general cookbook (written by The Minimalist) had a pretty brief description. Metafilter had several related discussions, but no good step-by-step instructions for newbies. I found what I was looking for on Bluebottle Coffee's website.
Precise directions, what to do, and what not to do. I've tried it out twice now, to relative success. I have a blade grinder rather than a burr grinder, so my grounds weren't perfectly even, but at least they were fresh. The coffee was the perfect temperature, very rich, and had a light foam on top. The inevitable bits of grounds/dust in the bottom of the cup were there, but hey, if I can handle Turkish coffee (the last 1/3 of the cup is grounds) I can remember not to drink the last sip of my French press.
